It is once again time for an overdue update for everyone. Things have been
moving very quickly over the last month, and we have finally entered the home
stretch for water main construction. By the end of the day today all of the
initial 120,000+ feet of water main will be installed except one small area of
about 200 feet.

Starting next week one construction crew will be working on installing the
last of the water services in sections 3B and 7 (see map below). They should be
finished up in around two weeks or less. Once done they will move to
restoration, working alongside the second crew.

The second restoration crew returned at the beginning of this week. Concrete
work is their first area of focus (driveways, curb and gutter, and sidewalks).
They have completed concrete work in section 3B already, and they will continue
working in sections 4, 6, and then 7 until they have all of their concrete
complete. Their next area of focus will be asphalt work. They will follow a
similar order with that work, starting in section 3B then heading to
sections 4, 6 and finally finishing in section 7. Once that work is complete they will finish up by addressing everyone's yards.

All together the majority of the restoration is expected to take over one
month yet. There will be some smaller loose ends and punch list items that will
continue to be addressed after that.

The work completed under Contract B1 (sections 9 and 10) has
for the most part been done since the end of last summer. The punch list items
in those sections are still being addressed. We do expect those remaining
loose ends to be wrapped up in the coming weeks.

For those of you who have signed up for water and have not
yet received your letters to hookup (this would be parts of section 3B and all
of section 7) please continue to hang tight. We still have to install your
services and do the testing and flushing, but by the end of the month you
should get your letters.

Everyone involved with this project cannot thank you, the
residents, enough for all of your continued patience and tolerance. And those
of you that are at your wits' end, don't worry completion is in sight!

Not too much has changed since my last post. This is mostly due to the bad weather preventing the construction crews from doing their job. If the nice weather sticks around (fingers crossed) they should be able to get a lot of work done in the coming weeks though.

Both water main crews are continuing to progress south on Juniper and Ironwood Streets in the Rolling Meadows subdivision. Once complete they will just have 21st St and Kapok St to complete in Rolling Meadows, which they will start on immediately.

NIPSCO has a subcontractor, Infrasource, working on relocating the gas main at Dogwood and 10th St. They hope to be wrapping their work up in time for the water main crews to jump over there as soon as Rolling Meadows is complete.

I have attached the map as always, but there haven't been any changes since the last post.

Hello again everyone,

First, my apologies for the extra-long delay since my last update.

As the observant of you will have noticed, construction is continuing through the winter months, slowly but surely. For short periods when the weather is particularly bad (a few days here and there) expect that construction crews will take a break. That being said, they still do plan to continue working whenever possible. More importantly, this means that they still do plan to complete underground pipe installation before the end of this winter.

As you can see in the updated construction map below, there are only two sections where water main instillation is not yet complete.

Those residents in Section 7 (Rolling Meadows) can expect somewhere around three or four weeks before water main instillation is complete (subject to weather delays).

Section 3B is about half way complete. Water main has not yet been installed on 10th St, Dogwood St, and Elm St SW. We are waiting on a NIPSCO gas main to be relocated along 10th St before completing work in this section. NIPSCO has been scheduled to finish their work since the beginning of the new year, but they are experiencing weather related delays with their crews. Our expectation is that by the time water main instillation is finished in Section 7 NIPSCO will complete their work in Section 3B.

In addition to Sections 7 and 3B there are also a few water services that have to be installed in Section 6. This work is expected to be finished by the end of winter too.

As I had previously mentioned the bulk of the restoration work (topsoil, seeding, asphalt patching, and concrete patching) will have to be postponed until weather allows. This will be sometime in the spring.

Just as a reminder, the NORWEJ Board meetings have been changed to the fourth Monday of the month, at 6:00 PM, before the Town Board meeting. They are open to the public, but if you do have a specific topic you would like discussed please contact the Town Hall beforehand to verify it can be added to the meeting agenda.

As always, thank you for your patience and cooperation as construction moves to the final stretch. Check back soon

Water main construction has been progressing and it is about time for another update. The two water main crews have finished up along 15th St, all the way from Ironwood SW on the west end to CR 700 W on the east end. They have also finished up in the Iron Lake Estates subdivision. Please check out the updated project map below.

Both water main crews will be finishing up the last of the main in Section 4 over this week and into the following week. If all goes smoothly the first crew expects to be working in Section 3B by next week. Then the following week the second crew expects to be working there as well. They will be busy there through the end of the month.

After that, one of the crews is planning to spend the first week of December in Harvest View (Section 6).

Once all of the other water main is done both crews will move to Rolling Meadows (Section 7), where they plan to finish out the year.

The third crew will continue following behind the other two. They will be installing water services and doing whatever restoration work the weather will allow.

Many residents have been and continue to hook up to the system. All sections that have been completed are now active, with the exception of Iron Lake Estates (Section 8). Flushing and bacteriological testing in that subdivision should take place within the next two weeks.

As always, everyone involved with this project cannot thank all of the residents enough for your continued patience. Check back soon for another update.

Hello once again everyone,

Another busy month of construction is complete. There is not too much new
information to report since the last update, but that doesn’t mean there hasn’t
been lots of work getting done. Crews
are still making their way through Section 8 (Iron Lake Estates). They will be busy there for a couple of weeks
still. Once Section 8 is complete the tentative
plan is to have them get the water main along 15th St finished, then
eventually move to the last part of Section 3 (south of the rail road tracks
and west of Halleck).

The number one concern that people have been expressing is the quality of
their lawns after the initial restoration.
These concerns are not going unnoticed and we have been working with the
Contractor to make sure they are addressed in a timely manner. The Contractor is being cooperative and is
going to go back and readdress the problem areas. Watering and regular mowing and maintenance
of the areas in front of your home will help expedite the growth. It is expected there will be some weeds that
pop up, but they are annual weeds that will eventually die. Mowing the weeds so that they don’t overtake
the grass sprouts will help as well.
Those especially bad areas will be addressed by a professional lawn care
subcontractor too. There is probably a
good month and a half of good growing left this year that we plan to take
advantage of.

Many residents have been busy hooking up to the water main in sections that
are already complete. Just as a
reminder, when the water is available in your area you will receive a letter
from the Town. Until you have received that
letter you should not schedule any work with your contractor of choice. It would, however, still be a good idea to get
in touch with a few contractors and shop around pricing while you are waiting
for your letter.

The map I uploaded last time is still up to date, but I have included it
again for you.

Thank you all very much again for your continued patience. And as always keep checking back for more
updates.

Hello once again everyone,

There has been a fair amount of progress since my last
update. The biggest news is that crews
have now completed construction in Section 10.
They still have a small amount of miscellaneous cleanup there, but all
water main, water services, and nearly all restoration is done. They also wrapped up the last of their work
in Section 5 on north 8th Avenue.

You probably have noticed the crews working on the south
side of Town, on either side of State Route 10 in the last week. The reason they are over there is that where ever
the main crosses the State Route they have to install a steel casing around the
water main, so they will be getting all of those installed now, while their
subcontractor is available. They should
be done with all of them by the middle of next week.

Their next goal is to wrap up some work that was recently
added in Section 9. They have extensions
on Hickory NW, Dogwood NW, and just north of W Division as well. Once these short runs are each complete they
will head back to Section 8, where the crews left off over last winter.

From there they will most likely wrap up Section 3 then work
their way to Section 7. I have updated
the Project Map for your reference below.

For those residents who have signed up and are in areas now
complete, be sure to check your mail for information from the Town on when
water will be available and when you should schedule the work for making your
connection. Those who haven’t yet
received a letter feel free to contact a few contractors and get an idea of
what to expect, but please do be aware that some of the contractors are seeing
high demands and are quite busy.

I have heard there are some of you who have already made
arrangements with a contractor but are finding they are having trouble fitting
you into their schedule before the deadline stated in your letter. If this situation describes you please
contact the Town Hall and make them aware of your predicament and they should
be able to help you.

As always, thank you all very much for the continued patience
and understanding as construction progresses.
And please keep checking back here for more updates.

Hello again Everyone,

There has not been to much to report since my last update. Contracts A and C, for the Treatment Plant and Elevated Storage Tank, respectively, are both now complete.

The water main contracts are moving along too. There are the few areas in the north west quadrant that the crews have yet to come back to, those being Hickory St south of 4th, Hickory St north of 6th, and Dogwood north of 6th.

Starting next Monday there will be some road closures as they jack steel casing under the rail road tracks at Birch SW and also across Halleck St at 8th NE and 6th SW. These closures will last a week or so each, detours will be posted for you to follow in the meantime.

The water main has now all been installed and pressure tested in Section 10. There will be crews still working there over the next few weeks as the finish up water service instillation and restoration work.

The next sections of main to be completed are scattered around Town. Once their casings are installed they will work on the remainder of the water main in Sections 4, 5, and 8. Once those Sections are wrapped up they will continue into Section 3. As usual, here is the map for your reference.

The water main in the area closest to the Tower (Sections 1 and 3) has passed bacteriological testing as is sterile and ready for users to begin using water. The next sections to be tested will be the north east portion of Town followed by the two elementary schools. Residents who are unsure if they are included in these areas should be aware that if you have not received a letter you don't have to worry about anything just yet.

As always, thank you very much for all of your understanding and patience. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6415531100858329061.post-19418676222678991712013-05-24T10:12:00.001-07:002013-05-24T10:12:36.511-07:00Progress UpdateHello again

As some of the observant residents may have noticed we have indeed begun pumping water. All this week we have been working on flushing out the lines between the Tower and the Well Plant. Flushing and bacteriological testing will continue into next week. Our hope is that within a few weeks we will be sterilizing the Tower. This means that in the near future we are expecting to have water available to the first section.

Those residents south of Division, east of Halleck St and north of the rail road tracks (or 8th St SE)will be receiving letters letting them know it is time to have your chosen plumber and excavator begin working. There will be a grace / instillation period during which those residents will have make their connections, and after which regular billing will begin. After everyone in the first section is hooked up we will begin flushing and testing the next sections one at a time. And again residents will receive a letter telling them to proceed with water line instillation. In any case, please just hang tight until you receive a letter, and if you have not yet received a letter you need not worry.

On Contracts B and B1: Restoration is still progressing in Section 9. This week and next concrete work will be the crew's main focus. As residents call and have smaller, miscellaneous clean up type items I have been adding them to a list. These items are being addressed as time allows; there are a number of them and they do take time. We ask for your continued patience; you are not and will not be forgotten.

Another crew is still working in Section 10. 7th Street, Golden Rain, Fir, and part of Dogwood all remain to be done and will be installed in the coming weeks. The only water main in this section that has been pressure tested so far is Almond. So as more streets are installed expect to see pressure testing and eventually the instillation of everyones' domestic services. The last map I uploaded is still applicable, but I have included it again for your convenience.

As I previously mentioned, 8th St (the last bit in Section 5) and Ironwood Lake (Section 8) are the next areas that will be tackled.

Just a quick update on whats new with the project. The hope is that by then end of next week we will begin flushing the lines from the Treatment Plant to the Tower. As the flushing and bacteriological testing progresses we will eventually be ready to have the first users connect to the system and begin using the water. The hook-up process will be coordinated with those users in the area, the plumbers, and the inspection personnel once we are ready. In the mean time, it is not a bad idea to get a list of plumbers from Town Hall and familiarize yourself with a few of the plumbers. This way they know what their work load will look like and you will have an idea of the associated costs.

The restoration work is progressing quickly. By the end of this week all of the paving and nearly all of the seeding work should be done in the northwest quadrant. There will still be some miscellaneous items (yard sprinkler systems in particular) to be done. All of the concrete work (curb and gutter, sidewalk, driveways) will be the next big item to tackle; you can expect that work to be under way within two to three weeks.

Other than that, progress is continuing just the same as the last map showed. Here is the map again for your reference.

Things have been moving right along since my last post and I wanted to keep everyone up to date. So without further ado

Contract C, Tower: The majority of the electric work has now been completed. We are waiting on NIPSCO to set up the electric meter for the service, which will hopefully be installed by next Monday at the latest. After that we should be able to begin flushing lines shortly there after, and eventually sterilizing the elevated storage tank. There are still some minor site work jobs like parking areas, seeding, and fencing. Those jobs will be taken care of in the coming weeks as well.

Contract A, Treatment Plant: There is only about a week's worth of work left at the Treatment Plant. There are some finishing touches for the pump controls and sterilization of well lines. Again, once there is power at the Tower the Plant crew can come in and wrap up what they need to in order to begin flushing lines from there to the Tower.

Contract B and B1, Water Main: The crews had been focusing most of their efforts on the northwest quadrant of Town and have now nearly completed that section. There is still some restoration work and a few services to install in this section. An entire crew is now being dedicated to catching up on all the restoration work that was delayed over the winter months. As the weather warms up expect to see concrete, asphalt and seeding work to take place, over the next month or so. We would like to express our gratitude to all those homeowners who have been patient as the restoration work progresses. And those who are starting to lose hope, hang in there! We haven't forgotten about all the sprinklers and yards that people are getting anxious to care for as spring breaks here.

As you may have already noticed, the area west of Town from W. Division to the rail road tracks is the next area where their efforts are being concentrated. Additionally the last section 5 is going to be an area of focus over the next couple of weeks. The north portion of section 4 and the remainder of section 8 will also be tackled in the not too distant future.

As completed sections are flushed and tested to be sure they are sterile the first users will be asked to start hooking up to the system. The areas will be made clear and we will be sure to coordinate with the users, contractors, and Town staff to make the process as painless and smooth as can be. So far things are continuing to go well and as always your continued cooperation is much appreciated.

Today's update will be a brief one. There has not been any work at the Tower since the previous update. The controls at the Plant are on site installation will take place over the next two weeks. Once instillation is complete it will allow the other contractors to begin flushing the water main and the Tower. So don't be surprised when you see water being flushed through the hydrants throughout Town. It is expected that we will have the first sections ready and that water will be available to the first users within a month or two.

The map shown below is the same one posted with the last update. The northwest quadrant of Town is still the primary area of focus. The remainder of this week and the early part of next week services will be installed in Ironwood Estates as well as Birch Street. Cedar Street is on hold for a couple of weeks while we wait on NIPSCO to relocate a gas main along that street. For those residents in the northwest quadrant, we ask that you understand the restoration work is weather dependent. Your driveways, sidewalks, lawns and anything else that has been disturbed will be replaced as soon as it can be, but this may not be for a month or more yet.

Thank you for your interest and please check back soonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6415531100858329061.post-43282411131647099112013-02-04T07:02:00.001-08:002013-02-04T07:02:32.213-08:00Project UpdateHello once again everyone,

It has been a little while since my last update, so I will go ahead share the latest with the project.

On Contract A, the well field and treatment plant, most of the work is complete and we are very close to being able to run water. The filtration and process piping are now complete. We are now waiting on the control panel which operates the high service pumps to be delivered and installed. Once it has been we should be able to flush the lines, take our bacteriological tests and start allowing the first users to actually hook up. Our best estimate for when the first users can receive water is sometime in March. At this point we are well ahead of schedule, as the due date for this contract is not until the summer.

On Contracts B and B1, the water main, progress is constantly being made. I have updated the map for every one's reference. You can go ahead and click on it to zoom in if you like.

I have highlighted completed sections in blue, and the yellow indicates where they will be working for the next few weeks. We had originally expected not to start work in section 9 until further towards the end of the project, but for various reasons it seems to be the best area to be working now. Progress has been made in sections 3, 4, 5, and 8 but there is still a bit more to be done in each of those areas. These will be put on the back burner for now, and we will come back to them once the asphalt mixing plant is out of hibernation in the spring. In section 9 we have staked out some of the main line but not any one's individual service locations yet. Once those services have been staked you will get a short letter on you door. At that point you should review the location and follow the instructions if you need the location changed. Until you have received a letter there isn't much to worry about as far as your individual services. Feel free to look at the stakes to get an idea of whats going to be put in your area, but we would like to ask that they not be tampered with.

On Contract C, the Tower, work is for the most part complete. There are still some less-major items (fencing, lighting, and site work) to be done, but at this point there is no rush on them.

For those who have been inquiring about the service hook up training class that will be offered: the first class is this Thursday the 7th in the evening and a second class is being offered Saturday the 9th in the morning. Please contact the Town Hall for more details if you'd like. Once these first classes have been held a list of attendees can be made available to anyone looking for a place to start looking for a contractor and/or plumber to make their hook up connection. At this point we are not sure if additional classes will be offered; we will base that decision on demand. If you would like to go and are available to attend we ask that you do so now rather than wait.

As always, thank you all for checking in and for working with us.

In the last progress update the winter schedule for the water main contracts was still up in the air. Since then, the contractor has decided that the areas highlighted in yellow would be good sections to tackle. One section is the east most portion of #3, north of the rail road tracks and east of Daisy. The other is #8, south of the tracks and east of Begonia. It is anticipated that between these two sections and assuming some bad weather at one point or another, this should be enough work to last through the winter. As these sections near completion we will keep everyone updated as to where they will go next.

I hope everyone had a happy thanksgiving and is excited for the holiday season. There has been a lot of progress since the last schedule update and things are going well.

Contract A: The treatment plant building itself is complete except for some minor finishing such as painting. The three wells are ready to pump water. Bacteria tests from each of the wells have been submitted and we are currently awaiting results. The instillation of the process piping within the plant is underway but it is not anticipated to be complete until mid January.

Contract B/B1: The updated the progress map below shows all of the water main that has been installed so far. Approximately one third of the water main has already been installed. As I have previously mentioned, they contractor hopes to continue working through the winter so long as the weather cooperates. Over the next month they will be working south Birch St SW from 9th St to 15th St, as well as north on Almond St NW from 3rd St to 6th. After these sections are completed (they will be worked on simultaneously) they have not decided where they will work next. It is worth mentioning that whatever areas they choose next will be areas where the main is to be installed under grass parkway, so sections that have the main under pavement will be postponed until spring. The reason for this is that the plant which makes hot mix asphalt closes over the winter, so the roads would not be paved until spring.

Contract C: The tower is complete! The next time you are driving down Halleck St or enjoying Spencer Park be sure to have a look. There is still some minor site work to be done, and the Tower has to be sterilized before put in use. I will post some pictures I took from the very top of the tower yesterday as soon as they are downloaded.

The NORWEJ board has made a decision on which meters to go with: they have chosen a no-lead brass bodied Neptune meter. A decision has been made to offer a monthly training class for plumbers and contractors who are interested in helping homeowners connect to the water system. The first of these classes will be offered sometime in January. Once all of the details for the class are worked out more information will be made available. There will be a public list of those who have completed the training class to help homeowners made an informed decision when choosing who they want to do their work.

As things are looking now, the first users should expect to have water available in late February to early March. And subsequent sections will be turned on as they are completed.

Thank you all again for working with us and understanding. And be sure to check back real soon for the pictures!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6415531100858329061.post-43173191556806558042012-11-14T07:35:00.001-08:002012-11-14T07:35:58.318-08:00Pictures of Progress

By David Brunsting and Nick Tremmel

When a community is investing in a large project such as the
NORWEJ water main in DeMotte, quality of the workmanship is essential. It is
certainly of the utmost importance to Abonmarche Consultants as well. Engineers
and inspectors have a few tools at their disposal to ensure the main has been
installed without any faults. Those tools come in the form of tests, principally
a timed hydrostatic leakage test and a bacteria test. The municipal water main
must pass these tests to ensure that it is ready for service prior to allowing
the public connect to the main. We at Abonmarche oversee these tests. The pressure testing portion is outlined in this post.

Leaks in a municipal water main
are problematic and can be costly. First, a water leak is essentially money
being dumped into the ground. When water is pulled out of the municipal well it
costs the system in the form of wear and tear on equipment and energy to run
the equipment. Since the processed water leaking into the ground will not go
through a water meter the costs of treatment cannot be recouped. Even small
leaks can cost municipalities tens of thousands of dollars per year if left
unattended. Second, leaks can be destructive to existing infrastructure. Even
small leaks can undermine and collapse roads and other structures. Additionally
a leak invites the possibility (albeit a slim one) for contamination of the
water in the line; whereas a sealed system provides a physical barrier to
contaminating bacteria.

If the water main could be installed above ground,
inspection for leaks would be very simple. Just fill the main with water under
system pressure and look for drips. Obviously, water main cannot be installed
above ground and must be buried so the question becomes, how do we ensure the
connections are acceptable? The answer is pressure testing indicates any leaks
and bacteriological testing indicates any contamination from the installation.

The way it works is rather simple. The main to be tested is
filled with water and air is expelled by opening hydrants along the way. Once
the pipe is completely filled with water from a clean well and almost all of
the air is out then the contractor connects a hydrostatic pump to the main. The
hydrostatic pump will bring the pressure of the entire line up to the test
pressure which in our case is 100 pounds per square inch. This test pressure is
roughly two times the system working pressure of 50 PSI. The pump is turned off
and the main is held at test pressure for a period of two hours. Because it is
almost impossible to get 100% of the air out of a water main the pressure will
begin to lower slightly, as seen in the picture. These minor losses are
expected, and they are the result of the remaining air trapped in the main,
temperature differences, minute movement of the pipe itself and other very
miniscule factors. The minor losses do not necessarily indicate a leak, but we
have to be sure. There are specifications that lay out (based on hypothesis and
empirical data) which draw a line, so to speak, between acceptable and
unacceptable pressure losses. After the two hours have passed and there has
been a drop in pressure the contractor has to pump the main back up to 100 PSI.
The specifications (in our case American Water Works Association, AWWA, C605)
outline an allowable amount of water to be used to return the line being tested
to the original pressure. This make up water typically amounts to 1 to 2
gallons depending on the length and diameter of the line being tested. Should
they go over the allowable amount the test fails and the contractor is
responsible for correcting the issue. It is common for a line to initially fail
a pressure test but pass on a subsequent attempt. This is most commonly the
result of excess air in the main. Though quite rare, on occasion a leak can be
found; the cause of the leak could be any number of things, be it material
issues or improper instillation or something else altogether.

As you may or may not have noticed, progress on all three parts of the project are moving right along.

On contract A, the well field and treatment facility, the block work for the building is now complete. As you drive by on 700W take a look to the east and you can get a good idea of what the facility will look like (without a roof that is).

On contract B, the water main, they are nearly finished with the second section (see updated map below). One crew will finish up the connection at the highway (US231/SR10) and Begonia then move to 10th st and Halleck Street. There they will be working southbound along the east side of Halleck Street (there will not be any lane closures on Halleck Street). Another crew will continue working in the alley one block east of Halleck Street from 10th Street to 8th Place. The third crew will be testing water main that has already been installed on Begonia, 10th St, 9th St, 8th Place, and Azalea. They will also be installing services where tests have passed and finally doing restoration work after the services have been installed. You may have noticed a crew from the directional drilling subcontractor working along Halleck Street as well. They will be drilling a few areas where open cut instillation is too difficult. These drilled lengths of pipe will be around 500 feet long and the regular pipe crews will tie onto them sometime down the road.

On contract C, the tower, fabrication is complete. The fabrication crew will be cleaning up today and tomorrow, then they will head out. The next step will be painting. The paint crew will be here as soon as they can, possibly late this week to early next week. They will put up a tent around the tower when they paint to protect both the finish as well as the surrounding area from paint. The hope is to have the painting complete before winter, but that depends on weather.

Hopefully this helps to keep everyone informed. Thanks, as always, for stopping by.

Hello again,

As construction progresses into residential areas more and more people are becoming aware of and possibly worried about the presence of the construction personnel. Unfortunately there will be some inconveniences with road closures and construction equipment that some may consider unsightly. I'm sorry to say this is just the nature of construction. Hopefully this post can help to limit the number and severity of any inconveniences and make the everyone aware of any that are unavoidable.

The first important point to raise is participation, that is your participation. When you are driving and see traffic control such as barricades or reflective drums they are there for a reason and should not be ignored. There are times when a road may be closed to through traffic and only open to local traffic. This means just what it sounds like, that if you are trying to get through the area you will have to take a different route. We realize this can be a hassle but it is necessary when construction personnel and equipment are moving around the area. If your destination is within the block designated as closed you should still be able to get there, as we try to be conscientious of any driveways (residential or business) and allow access. A good rule of thumb to go by if you are not sure whether or not you can get through is just to stop and ask. This is more respectful than driving over some one's property and, more importantly, much safer.

When construction does enter your neighborhood there is process that is followed. The first thing to be done is clearing any trees or other vegetation out of the right of way. Trees that cannot be saved and need to come down will be removed by a professional tree removal company. The company has experience dealing with tree removal as well as trimming; which they will use to make decisions on whether or not a tree can survive branch and root trimming or if it will have to be removed. The trees and bushes that will be removed will all be on Town owned right of way and will not be replaced. This is mostly due to the safety issues having trees in close proximity to the road can cause. After clearing is complete the pipe crew will make its way down your block. They typically get 200-300 linear feet of pipe in a day, just to give you an estimated time frame for how long they will be on your block. Once all the water main in a section is installed it will be pressure tested. Once it passes the test the water services themselves will be installed from the water main to the right of way limit. Finally after all of this work is done a restoration crew will come through. This crew will restore topsoil, plant grass seed, patch driveways removed, and replace any other asphalt or concrete that was removed or damaged. Once this is done that should be all for the construction on your block; at this point you can breathe a sigh of relief.

A common question I have been receiving from residents is, "What's the next step once I've paid my sign up deposit?" Well, after the main is installed on your block everyone who is signed up for water will recieve a wooden stake with blue markings in their yards and a letter like whats below on their door.

As the letter says, you can move your service for your convenience but we ask that you do it with our help to make sure it stays in a reasonable place. It will be best to know your well location at this point, as in most cases your water service will enter your home at the same location as your well used to. If you are not sure and would like some guidance a local excavator or plumber may be able to help.

Once the service for your home has been installed to the right of way you will be responsible for the connection from there to inside. We are currently in the process of choosing a water meter manufacturer and model to use; once one is chosen all users will have to use the same meter and meeter pit.

That's all for now. Thank you again for your interest. My next post will be an update to the schedule map showing the progress that has been made since it was originally posted, so be sure to check back soon.

Hello again,

Here is the much anticipated post in which I will address the schedules for the different parts of the contracts. I'd like to begin by saying all information is estimated and very subject to change. We intend and hope to stay with the schedules but in construction that unfortunately doesn't always work.

Contract A - Well Field and Treatment Facility

The building itself is anticipated to be done in early October. The treatment equipment is expected to be installed by the end of November.

Contract C - Tower

The tower is expected to be assembled by the end of September. If the weather cooperates the intent is to have it painted by the end of November. If this does not work it will have to wait until spring to be painted.

Contracts B and B1 - Water Main

Both water main contracts have be broken up into ten separate sections. The map below shows the approximate locations and limits of each of these sections. Each of the sections generally have the same amount of pipe to be installed and as a result are expected to take about the same amount of time, somewhere around 4-6 weeks. The order in which the sections will be completed is based foremost on being out of the way for other anticipated Town projects. After that the order is based on the Contractor's judgement and may get switched around. So long as the weather allows it, work is planned to progress through the winter rather than taking a break.

Section 1 - For the most part, finished now

Section 2 - From now until early October

Section 3- Early October to mid November

Section 4 - Mid November to mid December

Section 5 - Mid December to mid January

Section 6 - Mid January to early March

Section 7 - Early March to mid April

Section 8 - Mid April to late May

Section 9 - Late May to late June

Section 10 - Late June to early August

I would again like to stress that this schedule is likely to change and is really intended simply to give residents a general idea of when to begin expecting work in their area.

I would also like to note that the first users should not expect water until Spring of 2013.

Again, I'd like to thank everyone for their curiosity and taking the time to visit. My next post should be up very soon and will be a very basic to-do list for users who have signed up for water.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6415531100858329061.post-17981163614443495862012-08-16T11:23:00.000-07:002012-08-16T11:23:06.265-07:00Project OverviewHello again,

This particular project is among the largest water main projects in all of Indiana right now. In order to make things easier for everyone involved in the project administration and construction the entire project has been broken down into four parts.

The first part (Contract A) deals with the well field and treatment facility. The plan is to have the plant and wells up and running by sometime early next summer or spring. Here is the view from earlier today.

This picture shows the two underground water tanks that were poured over the last few days. The things that look similar to ladders are the metal forms used to hold the wet concrete in place. Now that it has cured and hardened they are in the process of being removed, leaving behind the neatly formed tanks.
The next two portions of the project are for the instillation of the water main pipe itself. There are approximately 24 miles of pipe that will need to be installed over the next year and a half. The north west part of DeMotte makes up Contract B1, and all other areas are included in Contract B. As of today the workers are finishing up on County Road 700W (also known as Orchid Street within the Town limits) and at the same time making their way west along Division Street. Here is a picture taken on Division St just west of Town Hall from earlier this morning.
The picture shows one of the workers standing inside a tranch box. The box is the workers' best friend. Its purpose is to keep the sides of the trench supported so that the workers can work underground without fear of the walls caving in a burying them. The pipe is buried five feet below the surface and varies in size. The main from the well field to the tower is ten inches in diameter, as it gets further from the tower it tapers to eight inches and even further yet it reaches its minimum diameter of six inches.

Another interesting part of these two contracts is the instillation of the fire hydrants. This picture shows one that has been installed on County Road 700W, a bit south of the well field.

The hydrants will all look the same, and they will be set back from the road along the right of way limits. Along most roads this is twenty feet or so, but it does vary considerably depending on the particular road. They are spaced approximately 500 feet apart so that firefighters will always be able to connect to one close enough to a building. The hydrants do look a bit different from ones you may have seen in surrounding communities. The ones being installed on this project have a special connection to allow fire fighters to connect their hoses quicker than a typical hydrant. The hydrants will not be active until they are supplied with water from the wells about a year from now. Once they are active residents should be sure to contact their homeowners insurance agents because nearly all policies will provide a discount for being in range of a fire hydrant.

The final portion of the project is the water tower (Contract C). The water tower will hold 500,000 gallons of clean freshwater. It will be located just southeast of Spencer Park. The design has a single stem with a large closed 'bowl' on top. Its technical name is a "pedesphere" (think of pedestal and sphere) but some people refer to it more simply as a huge golf ball on a tee. The water in the tower will be 160 feet above the ground at its highest. The foundation for the tower is approximately six feet deep and sixty feet in diameter. It has been finished for a few weeks now. Currently the tower fabrication crew is working on welding all the pieces of the steel puzzle into their correct places. The bottom cone section of the tank is in place and the stem sections are being assembled on the ground. Here's a picture taken earlier today showing their progress so far.

Welcome to the official Northwest Jasper County Regional Water District (or NORWEJ for short) blog. The purpose of this blog is to inform any and all interested parties about the progress and anticipated schedule for the water project. The hope is to have a blog which is updated approximately on a weekly basis with any developments, changes, pictures, or otherwise valuable information. Ideally this will be an easy to use and condensed source of accurate information to be used by any future users or simply anyone with a curiosity towards the project.
